The latest of the Navision versions, Dynamics Nav 2009, was released in Nov, 2008 by Microsoft, and features a newly redesigned role-tailored user interface, three-tier architecture for scalability, and greatly improved/expanded web functionality and sharepoint integration. This new release is a huge step forward for Nav for both ease-of-use and ease of integration with the web and/or with other applications. With Dynamics Nav 2009, you can finally have the ease of use and intuitiveness of a QuickBooks type application with the power and flexibility everyone expects from the most customizable ERP on the market.
Of course, nothing is perfect, and while Nav 2009 is getting rave reviews for the new UI and architecture (and deservedly so), there were certainly a few bugs and glitches initially. The majority of these were addressed with the release of Service Pack 1 in September, 2009. This is typical of Microsoft software, though, as almost everyone knows -- you're generally safest if you wait a little while for the bugs to 'shake out' before adopting the 'latest and greatest', unless you're tech savvy and brave enough to want to be an 'early adopter', or unless you just can't live without the great new features.
Dynamics Nav 5.0 or 5.1 are the primary Nav versions in common use at this time. Both are solid and stable, and from a functionality and user interface standpoint, there's not a lot of difference. However, the back end structure of 5.1 (also called 5.0 Service Pack 1, or 5.00.01) is very different than the structure of 5.0, because Microsoft built 5.1 to pave the way to 2009 -- so 5.1 and 2009 have substantively the same back end and database structure.
Previous versions are still in use by many people, but nothing earlier than version 4 is officially supported by Microsoft, and 4 probably won't be supported much longer.
